Just not worth it

I had a hard time getting into this game, but after years of Civ playing I just figured it was me and eventually I’d come around and see the inherent greatness. I eventually came around and decided it’s not me. This game is not on par with any prior Civ game. There’s potential here. It has a lot of interesting ideas but the game as a whole doesn’t feel like it was fully vetted. Now I see it’s 60% off. No doubt judging by my experience and a lot of other comments online. Oh well, I still have Civ5.

Most people think this will never finish, That not true.

It pretty longest game, it lot fun around with wise like own country. I did playing first game and to complete for almost week, ever tonight, playing this, it really lot fun and challenge.

Disappointing for veteran Civ fans

I’ve been playing Civ since version 1 in the early 90s I don’t really see enough improvements in actual gameplay to rate the cost of the game. It seems more like an extensive mod than a new game. I think I’ll just go back to Civ V and not waste anymore time playing this game. Sad, I had high hopes for this...

Awesome graphics and classic gameplay

Love the intro, having a blast working through the quick play games with different leaders. Big step up from Civ classics on the graphics front and runs smooth on my 3 year old Macbook Pro. Looking foward to the next release in the series.

Big Bug at the Finish?

Maybe it’s me, but on my first game I got toward the end and needed a certain wonder for an “Emancipation” victory, which is supposed to be a unique victory plan for the Affinity I was in, “Sovereignty.” When I wanted to build the wonder, it said I didn’t have enough “Purity” points which is a different Affinity. ??? Like one of the other reviewers, I put a lot of time into this first game just to learn it only to find this weird situation at the end. Otherwise, the game is okay. It’s like all the others with a different context. I am sure the creators wanted it to be complex and challenging, but in my opinion it is a bit too complex.

Freezes

Got this game…and it was great until it randomly starts crashing after the beginning cinematic movie finishes. Always worked fine and now it doesn’t. I will give 5 stars when they fix the bugs and crashes. Until then…no. Not a good game to spend money on.

Cant even play

Would potentially give this game more stars if i could actually get to a game menu to be able to play. Cant get anywhere and cant get any support to find out why. Thank goodness i only wasted $20.00 for this game…. dissapointed in Aspyr customer service (or lack thereof).

Pretty good, just not quite as intense as Civ V or Civ IV

I have played this game several times. Graphics are good. Game play can get a bit boring waiting on AI players. I haven’t gotten to see the integration with Starships, but overall solid game play. A bit complex keeping the tech going and the military strong. I get into the game for a while, but in the late stages my one more turn mentality turns into, are we done already?

Good, but less so than Civ V

Still a strong strategy game as you would expect from the Civ series. Lacks the "umpf and wow” of the artistry, music, and wonders of Civ V. The aliens at the beginning of each game are fun and challenging to irradiate. The unit upgrades are amazing. I have not experienced any bugs or difficulty reaching victory after two full play-throughs.

Buggy and Slow for No Good Reason

I am running Civ Earth on a comparatively low-powered Mac that nevertheless meets all the minimum RAM and video specs. The game runs unplayably slow even when all the settings are turned down to the minimum. And weird graphic glitches appear everywhere. I took this problem to the Apple Store, and they confirmed that my machine meets the minimum specs and has nothing wrong with it. I hope Civ Earth will release an update that allows users to opt into graphic, video, and other settings that are lower than the current minimum. Otherwise, you may waste money on this title unless you have a high-powered gamer computer, and I won’t be able to buy or recommend Civ. titles in the future.

Not So Much

I am a Long time Civ player and I give this game a 4.95 for visuals, Concepts gets a 3, Learning curve gets a 2 and play gets a 2 for an overall rating of 3. I am glad I purchased it on sale. This one for me is going back on the shelf the play is just too sluggish and boring.

Gave it MORE than a fair chance.

Bottom line up front, price dropped from $59.99 to $19.99 for a reason. This game is worth MAYBE 7 bucks, and should have just been an addon to civ5. I rarely write reviews, but I really hope this discourages someone from buying this game, because CLEARLY the developers are riding the name of civilization, and not producing quality product. The main issue here is the AI simply has no desire to allow gameplay. Your options (even on the most simple difficulty) are to choose one of 3 “paths” to victory, or schools of thought. I guarantee you that whichever you choose will frustrate the ai to the point they attack you even from a friendly status. If this were not enough, the aliens (cool concept, garbage delivery) are a wildcard who will overpower and attack you at any chance. Do NOT compare them to barbarians, as these aliens are strategic, have hordes of units, and will send siege weaponry to destroy your outposts and cities. It is possible to pursue harmony with the aliens, thus making them a small amount more docile, but they will still attack workers, trade routes, ships, explorers, and outpost vehicles, thus crippling your economic pursuits. Again, stick with Civ 5, and if you need to invest money in more civ, buy some expansion or DLC. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME.

Good… Until You Finish The First Game

A couple years ago my very close friend introduced me to Civilization 5, I imediately fell in love with the game. I got all the expansion packs and everything, I loved the historical elements (A huge history nerd teenager) that came along with it, and learning about the different famous leaders, diffferent city names of each civilzation–everything. My friend, the same friend, got this game and said he played it for the frist 100 turns or so and he didn’t like it. I was determined to seek some good interest in the game. I started playing it, and it felt like all the civilisations were practically the same. They all had the same units, same look to the buildings; it is NOT original. Also, the biggest problem in this game is that theres no way to gauge how far you are in the game, because its in the future and everything, which is cool but its a game that was built around revolving history. By the time I was at 400 turns, I repeat, 400 turns, I had only conquered one civilisation, this was on the quickest speed possible to run the game. Maybe I was taking my time in the game but nonethless, by around 250-300 turns I would have conquered the world by then. I don’t know what really happened there as to why it’s so slow. Also I only played one game and lost interest pretty quickly. It wasn’t worth the $50 I paid for it, It should have been more like 10$ – 15$. Thanks for reading my review, have a great morning, day, or evening (depending on when you’re reading this)!

Great game but a bit buggy

I’ve been playing this game for quite some time now, and although it is VERY fun there is one MAJOR problem that this game has. This problem comes from orbital satellites causing the game to crash. It was amazing to see that we can now use satellites to further our goals. However, when there are too many satellites on the map, the game tends to crash. It is pretty much guaranteed that if there are a ton of satellites on the map and the game prompts you to use a satellite it will crash. Developers should really look into that because it keeps taking away from the game. PLEASE FIX THE STUPID BUG WHERE SATELLITES CAUSE THE GAME TO CRASH AND I’LL GIVE YOU A HIGHER RATING, BUT FOR NOW 3 STARS ONLY (AND I’M BEING GENOROUS).

its fun

Shame on you Firaxis….

I am a big fan of Civ since first playing it at my brothers many, many years ago. Thank you to him for sharing that with me. I gave 3 stars because I can see the potential and the, "Shame on you Firaxis”, comment comes from the disappointment I felt after playing the game. Firaxis should be putting out a polished Civ game but instead made me feel like they are getting their formula together and are new at this. What I mean by that is this, why oh why is there a time’s/turns up factor in this new game that we should be allowed to explore and accomplish something in before the time’s up? Winning and Loosing don’t feel like they have a meaning when time is up and you won or lost based on that. Civ 5 was almost perfect, thus I expected the new game (Beyond Earth) to be just that only in space on other planets. Instead I feel like this game was released with planned bugs and limitations so that the next DLC can unlock those issues for you and make it better but wait, give it a few more years and wham we may have a Civ 5 feel and flow to this game. Is that necessary? With the 500 turns in play, it really makes this system broken since you don’t have a true victory goal. You can go immediately for the victory goal and still win or you can just go for all quests and keep on building etc. until 500 turns are up and based on the randon number generator the game favors you or the A.I. Mostly you depending on your ease of level. I don’t like the cosmetic feel when you are in the build screen and your mouse goes over things as you look to pick your next build. The information gets in the way of seeing what you want to pick. That’s a little thing and it is annoying just the same. Understanding that you have 500 turns has you picking things that are immediately usable in relation to how many turns you have left. Knowing how to skew the game kinda breaks it. Why not concentrate on new maps, new alien leaders with better expiditions and quests and fixing the time/turns constraint that makes you feel like you aren’t sure what just happened? Be a truly Universal game and allow the planets to be inhabited by aliens that are not prehistoric like and instead perhaps they show us how things are done. Give us alien trading posts. Let my leader/sponsor come from Jupiter or Saturn. Give me some sic-fi fun in this. Just imagine a Civ Star Wars. Think about it. Love the easier way to buy land around your city by the by. I purchased this game when it came out and have taken this long to explore it based on the funky feel and awkward flow it has. I will continue to explore and test things out just because I love Civ and Civ-like games. If something comes along to change my mind I will update this review. I have found myself going back to Civ 5 now and then. There is potential here and I am waiting for it to manifest. Come on Firaxis, make me want that “One more turn”. *Note: I have never experienced this game crashing on me nor have I had slowness issues and my iMac is from 2011. After playing for a long time I do get the black map slowness as it adjusts graphics but that is it and I don’t always see that. ****Update: So I noticed that you get 500 turns no matter what. Ok unless you turn on turns which kills the victories.

Not ready for primetime - don’t buy !

Wasted several hours just to have it crashing again, and again and again and again and again and again and again Want my money back!

Bad to the bone!

I can’t think of anything good to say about this game.

Good but needs work

IOt’s a fun game. but the tech tree needs to be balanced a bit better, and the trading/resource/diplomacy system needs review and tweaking. there’s no real use for many of the resources in the same way that luxury resources in Civ V have. Hopefully 1.1 will fix these game flaws.

Give it a shot.

It’s a great game if you let yourself enjoy it on its terms. Don’t prejudge it or bring expectations.
