Civilization: Beyond Earth App Reviews

Playable, but why bother?

It looks like the same alpha centuri game Sid Meir has been grinding out for years since the DOS gaming days. I painfully finished a few games, hoping it would grow on me. I normally love Sid Meir games but for some reason this one just doesnt do it for me…. There are some minor glitches in the gameplay, but nothing horrible. Boring, boring, boring…….

It’s actually great

I put off buying this because of all of the low ratings. I had low expectations. I love it. I understand why people might not like it. It is complex, it’s not as intuitive as the other Civilization titles. A big part of it is that in classic CIv, you are dealing with technology and resources that already exist, so a big part of understanding the game’s strategy comes naturally. In this game, you have to learn. But other than that, it’s excellent. I love its complexity. There are so many more dimensions to gameplay. Civ V is my favorite game but this game is absolutely more complex. There are new forms of narrative, new goals, new assets.. also beautifully put together as always. I am happy to have spent the $40. Even if you don’t like it, you have to admit that it is exceptionally well put together.

game keeps crashing

Has anyone else been experiencing this while playing? My computer is all up to date and I don’t know what else to do,I have uninstalled and install the game several times, but it steals crashes on me. It’s very frustrating

We want our money back!

This is the worst game humanly possible. I now look back at the fact that I made this purchase and I am appalled. Their are so many things wrong with this game that I do not have enough space to list them all. First I hate how they made up all the quotes, yeah I get it that this is in the future but they could at least include some actual quotes. I also hate the whole idea of Miasma because it is just plain dumb and a easy way to kill units. As for the alien lifeforms, you cannot make up biology they need plants and with plants comes sunlight, it is entirely dark and it is depressing. also when their is an undiscovered land it is a black hexagon representing it, I prefered it when their were clouds and the world looked alive, you need rain for plants in most cases. The concept is also bad because we cannot relate to the civilizations because they are made up. They at least could have thrown in countries like the U.S, Britain, China, Russia, Japan, etc instead of the organizations that they made up. Also if they had a global intiative to save the human race I’m pretty sure that they wouldn’t be competing and going to war. In fact I deleted this game after an hour or 2 of playing it because it is just a waste of my precious disk space and I asked for my money back. Please do your self a favor and do not buy this game.

very fun very different from Civ 5

structure similar to Civ 5 but very different style of play, more immersive and in-game decisions affect the outcome… very fun and compelling story behind the game as well. Not nearly as complex as Civ 5 so a bit easier to manage things (there’s no money for example and unhappiness is more about health - which is easier to manage). The aliens are very cool.

CIV V remains the best choice

This game did not have many improvements from the CIV V. So if youre looking for some strategy game the best choice remains CIV V. I hope they get it better with updates because the idea of the game and the theme are good but it was poorly executed. The diplomatic part is equal to the CIV V, few units and “civs", the scientific research get more interesting with the way-lined form … Summarizing tt seems that the game was released in a hurry with many things missing ....

it doesnt run on old MacBooks

if you dont have a fast computer, give up! my 2012 macbook runs it poorly, making it impossible to play.

Stürzt dauernd ab / Crashes all the time

Civ

Has the possibility to be great but unlike civ 5 misses some marks but if you like civ then you’ll like this

Great new addition!

I have played every single iteration of Civilization including Colonization (when it ran in DOS) and Alpha Centauri. Civ BE is familiar enough to make it easy for experienced players to pick up right where they left off. However, it is also different enough to create a learning curve, discover new things and take into account other factors. I do have to say though that I hate the miasma!!!! Now, when do we get a remake of Colonization or Simtower?

Very confusing for someone new

I have never played a civilization game and wanted to try this out. This game is lacking tutorials and failed to explain how things work and what the objectives are.

addictive

I think its great. people that dont like it, is because you actully need a brain and think for this game.

Should have been an expansion pack

My biggest problem with “Beyond Earth” is that it doesn’t feel like an all-new game. It feels more like an add-on to Civilization V, and that it should have been a paid expansion pack rather than a full standalone game. There are some new features which I really like, such as the radial tech tree (as opposed to linear), but not enough to make it feel like a new game. It’s also highly confusing. Civilization games get away with a lot of what they do because we have real-world analogues to help us understand. We know that a field of wheat provides food. However it is completely unreasonable to just expect the player to know what “Biomass” does, and I’m not jumping over to the Civipedia every time I want to find out. The game is also nearly impossible to properly strategize on your first play through. The victory conditions have several stages, or steps to them. However, you can not properly prepare for future stages because it only shows you one step at a time. Once you’ve played through it once, and you know that a certain technology is going to be required at a future stage, then you can properly strategize. I say all this, but the bottom line is that it’s a solid game, and it seems to work well. I just feel like some unreasonable expectations are in play, such as expecting people to pay full new-game price and knowing what everything does and how it works on an alien world.

Not up to standards

This version is not as player-friendly as the previous versions. It is not possible to make certain choices and this lowers the enjoyment.

Solid game

There are couple of glitches like quests that can not be completed due lack of the specific resource (quest requires it to be near the city and it’s not or is surrounded by unpassable mountains). Nothing major… Considering that they’ve redone some things, it is a good game to play.

Blah

It is an okay game but pretty blah. Not nearly as good as Alpha Centuri, but some interesting changes. Not as customizable as previous CIV games. Like Civs 4 and 5 (and maybe 3, I don’t remember) the game unceremoniously ends.

Not able to upgrade my game

Civilization has released a major patch recently, but I cann’t upgrade it in the mac app store… I recommend everybody buy this game in the steam store, not app store.

not to par

If you have civ 5 dont even bother buying this. It doesnt have the fun dynamics between factions that it did before and feels like it was stripped down for slightly better visuals. It also runs alot slower than civ 5 does on my mac and overrall is just not fun. Would not recommend

First Civ I Ignore daily

I cant believe ive played this game a handful times since launch.. i was excited for the mac release.. not very progressive for a new game… i would fall asleep playing civ 5.. hopefully there is expansions that will add depth to this title. Also there is one planet that you are on.. no space travel. no war of the worlds.

Multiplayer and patches do not work

You are isolated with this App-Store version (support, updates, patches, multi-player experience,…). Buy it from Steam: I love Civilization series; The game itself as single player is good. I would have given 5-star if it was Civilization BE with Aspyr support. But I cannot play multiplayer. This App Store version of BE is Single-Player. I had Civ5 on Steam and had no problem with multiplayer. This one purchased from App Store seems to run smoother but lacks multiplayer option! Also, updates to game mechanics are not applied to this Version.
